Nailya Alexander - Director
Nailya Alexander Gallery specializes in Russian vintage (1920s-1950s) and contemporary photography. The gallery also shows contemporary artists from both Europe and the United States. The gallery’s focus has been the rediscovery of lesser known yet significant periods and artists in the history of photography, dedication to gallery artists and support of emerging talent. Nailya Alexander represents the Arkady Shaikhet and Max Penson Estates. She has mounted museum quality exhibitions such as Staging Happiness: The Formation of Socialist Realist Photography (2004), Remembering WW II (2005), Alexander Zhitomirsky: Photomontages 1931-1973 (2005), Turkestan: Orientalism in Soviet Avant-Garde Photography (2006), Unforeseen: The Personal in Photography from Soviet Russia (2007), Dmitri Baltermants (2010). Gallery exhibitions have been reviewed in The New York Times, The New Yorker, The New York Sun, Wall Street Journal, ARTnews and Art in America. Gallery artists (e.g. Alexey Titarenko, Pentti Sammallahti) have gained critical acclaim and international recognition, and are included in the collections of major European and US museums.
Nailya Alexander is a member of the Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) since 2000.
