Nailya Alexander, Director
Nailya Alexander Gallery specializes in Russian vintage (1920s-1950s) and contemporary photography. The gallery focuses on the rediscovery of lesser-known yet significant artists and periods in the history of photography, and prides itself on its dedication to gallery artists and its support of emerging talent.
For over fifteen years, Nailya Alexander Gallery has mounted museum-quality exhibitions such as Staging Happiness: The Formation of Socialist Realist Photography (2004), Alexander Zhitomirsky: Photomontages 1931-1973 (2005), Turkestan: Orientalism in Soviet Avant-Garde Photography (2006), Iraq: Scars and Exile (2008), Light of Modernity in Buenos Aires: 1929-1954 (2011), George Tice: 60 Years of Photography (2013), and Alexey Titarenko: New York (2015). Gallery exhibitions have been reviewed in The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Guardian, the Wall Street Journal, ARTnews, and Art in America.
Gallery artists, such as Alexey Titarenko and Pentti Sammallahti, have gained critical acclaim and international recognition as a result of their representation by Nailya Alexander Gallery, and are now included in the collections of major European and U.S. museums. In 2015, gallery artist Irina Nakhova became the first female artist selected to represent Russia at the Venice Biennale. Nailya Alexander represents the Arkady Shaikhet and Max Penson Estates, and has been a member of the Association of International Photography Art Dealers since 2000.
