Portrait of Mayakovsky, 1924
Gelatin silver print
4 1/4 x 3 1/8 in. (10.8 x 7.9 cm)
Taken in 1924, this photograph of Russian revolutionary poet Vladimir Mayakovsky is one of Alexander Rodchenko's earliest photographs. With resounding energy, the photograph captures Mayakovsky's intense demeanor, and the pencils in his pocket that mark him as a writer. Rodchenko would incorporate this photograph into a photomontage appearing on the back cover of Mayakovsky's 1926 book, A Conversation with a Tax Collector About Poetry.

The booklet includes an introduction by Russian theater director Vsevolod Meyerhold, who wrote that the movie was “the best American film comedy I have ever seen.” Keaton became one of the most popular American stars in the USSR after bootlegged foreign movies became available in the early 1920s.

22 1/4 x 21 in. (56.5 x 53.3 cm)
Edition 1 of 5
Mademoiselle is part of Marcia Lippman's most recent series of photographs Of Beauty. In this series, she continues to explore how texture, imperfections in paint, and the richness of gesture — coupled with the imagination — can bring life to painting. Her photographs invite long observation and often focus on a minute area of the canvas where "paint cracks are intensified, underscoring their vulnurability."

Painted 2017
Vintage gelatin silver print with applied oil paint
Image: 9 1/4 x 7 1/4 in. (23.5 x 18.4 cm)
Paper: 10 x 8 in. (25.4 x 20.3 cm)
Niagara Falls is a place Rhoney calls home and is a source of frequent return and inspiration for her. This photograph — through themes of water, light, air, mystery, and the elements — embodies the artist's style and subject matter. With careful study, Rhoney has painted the photograph by hand, masterfully revealing the falls's luminosity.
